Why women have no appetite for eating out: Counting calories is too hard... and dessert is too tempting

It should feel like a treat - the chance to escape both the chore of preparing a meal and the resulting washing up.
But many women have come to dread the prospect of dining at restaurants because they can't work out the calorie content of the food and end up eating more than they normally would.
Even if they opt for seemingly healthy dishes, they can never be sure how many grams of fat are in the salad dressing or whether the fish was coated in oil before being grilled.
How the calories can mount up
Nearly half of women admit to feeling guilty after going to a restaurant while a quarter try to avoid it altogether, a survey has found.
Almost two-thirds fear that despite their best efforts, they will ultimately succumb to the calorie-laden options on the menu - such as sticky toffee puddings or strawberry cheesecakes.
And a third worry they will end up eating far more than they do at home because the portions are so much larger, the survey by Alli, the slimming pill firm found. Many will eat more than twice as many calories by choosing a starter, main, and dessert plus several glasses of wine. And by including coffee in this, women could consume more than 2,000 calories - the recommended daily allowance.

The canine obesity epidemic has reached alarming levels, meaning five million dogs are unlikely to reach a healthy and happy old age, says the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals.

The disturbing findings come from the charity’s annual dog obesity league, compiled from the medical records of 30,000 animals.

"We have been working for a long time to resolve these critical issues, with the objective of finding a solution that safeguards our consumers and operates within the boundaries of UAE law."
BlackBerry was introduced in the UAE in 2006, one year before the introduction of new national security legislation, the statement indicated.

Idiot drivers ... the sequel

Alarming footage of a reckless biker riding full-throttle on one wheel on Sheikh Zayed Road proves dangerous drivers remain undeterred on Dubai’s highways, campaigners warn.Just three weeks after two Emirati 4x4 drivers escaped with a dhs1,000 fine for a two-wheeled stunt on the same highway, footage of a thrill-seeking motorcyclist following suit has emerged.
The two-minute video, which has the Mission Impossible theme tune as its soundtrack, was uploaded on YouTube on Saturday and shows a trio of bikers speeding along the Al Barsha stretch of road before one pulls an almost vertical wheelie and careers down the middle lane for several kilometres.
General manager of Emirates Driving Institute, Peter Richardson, slammed the antics and said a tougher message must be sent out by the authorities. “They think they are above the law,” he said. “The punishment given to those 4x4 drivers unquestionably reinforces that infallibility. An example should have been made of those drivers. These road users are impervious to warnings.”

Former NH teacher avoids jail on nude photo charge

Former high school teacher Melinda...DERRY, N.H. — A former high school teacher won’t be going to jail after pleading guilty Monday to a charge she e-mailed nude photographs of herself to a 15-year-old student at Londonderry High School.

"I wish the student and his family well," she added.
Dennehy, 41, of Hampstead, could have faced up to seven years in prison if she had gone to trial on the felony. As part of her plea agreement, Dennehy’s one-year jail sentence was suspended for two years on condition she remain on good behavior and have no contact with the teen or his family, or go to the school. She resigned three weeks after she was charged in March.
Neither the teen nor his family were in court. Prosecutor Kevin Coyle told Derry District Court Judge John Coughlin that family supported the plea agreement "and want to put this incident behind them."
