A SYDNEY man who hit a baby with a crutch before almost cutting her head off with a meat cleaver has been found not guilty of her murder on the grounds of mental illness.
After Justice Robert Shadbolt Hulme delivered his verdict in the New South Wales Supreme Court today, Jayant Kumar Singh said from the dock: "I am very sorry for what I have done."

The judge found that Mr Singh, who had recently been released from a mental health facility, killed the nine-month-old girl in front of her two young siblings on December 22, 2006, at a house in Campsie, in Sydney's southwest.

A post-mortem report revealed the baby had brain injuries and extensive fractures to her skull, and her neck had been cut deeply with "near decapitation".

Mr Singh had been babysitting the three children.

Their mother said he had never shown any aggression towards them and had a good relationship with the baby.

The judge ordered Mr Singh to be detained in a prison hospital at Sydney's Long Bay Jail "until released by due process of the law".
