Crime 'dropped during SWC'

Johannesburg - Visible policing in Pretoria and Johannesburg saw significant drops in violent crime during the Soccer World Cup, security officials told Beeld in a report on Friday.

"Break-ins at houses in the south of Pretoria and Centurion decreased significantly," said ADT security company's managing director Clive Humphrey.

In the western parts of Johannesburg, crime reports decreased by 70%, while the eastern parts saw a 60% drop, said ADT Johannesburg head Roy Rawlins.

This was due to "visible policing combined with the strategic use of resources for the World Cup", said Rawlins.

Police spokesperson Colonel Vishnu Naidoo confirmed that
 the World Cup saw a drop in crime but would not give statistics.
