Iraq: Authorities Kill 58,000 stray dogs

Fear of attacks on children leads to killing of animals

The veterinary authorities in Baghdad have killed 58 000 stray dogs in the last three months, a decision which came after reports of attacks by packs that will result in the death of children. However, there are no official data on the number of human victims. This offensive against the many thousands of animals living on the streets of Baghdad was planned since 2008 but only now there were sufficient funds.

Among the methods used by the brigades who are responsible for killing the dogs is the distribution of poisoned meat and killing with firearms.
