Girls should marry aged 16-18: Iran's Ahmadinejad

The president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad urged Iranian girls to marry at 16 and young family to graduate from the 20 - announced yesterday the local daily newspaper 'Jam-e-Jam'

The arguments of the president, whose ultra-conservative family policy has sparked some controversy in the country, are clear: the population of Iran, about 75 million people, should double as a "weapon" against Western pressure.
"The age of marriage for men is now 26 years and women 24. There is no reason for this to happen "- said the Iranian leader, adding:" The ideal age [for marriage] should be around 16 or 17 years for women and 20 men. "
According to figures from t
he last census, one third of Iran's population is between 15 to 30 years.
