It is another strange twist in the story of a grandmother who police say tried to sell her 12-week-old grandson.
FOX 35 obtained a six-page investigative report from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement which reveals that Patti Bigbee, 45, used Facebook to try to sell her grandson, and that the potential buyer wasn’t a stranger but a daughter, named Danielle. Bigbee gave up Danielle for adoption 26 years ago and had recently reconnected with that long lost daughter about five months ago on the popular social networking site.
According to investigators, Danielle told Bigbee last month that she had children and wanted more. Bigbee told Danielle she was "taking care of her infant grandson that was abandoned by one of her daughters.” Bigbee claimed she did not want to care for this grandson and offered her grandson to Danielle saying “she could better care for the baby."
“They seemed to be doting grandparents. They took really good care of the baby,” said a neighbor. He could not imagine that Bigbee had any plans to part with the baby.
According to the arrest sheet, when Danielle told Bigbee she and her husband would adopt the baby, Bigbee said the infant's mother wanted a $75,000 fee. That’s when Danielle notified the police.
She continued corresponding with Bigbee, negotiating the down to $30,000. At one point, the women started talking on the phone. According to the FDLE report, they gave Danielle a device to record the conversations that she had with Bigbee so that investigators could listen in on the plans for the hand-off.
