Almost 400 teachers accused of crimes in past five years

Nearly 400 teachers in the Grampian area have been accused of more than 450 crimes in the last five years - including sex offences, drug dealing and child cruelty - STV News can reveal on Friday.

In 2009 alone, 70 teachers in the region - which covers Aberdeen city, Aberdeenshire and Moray - were accused of 86 crimes, including rape, fraud and soliciting the services of a prostitute.

Figures obtained exclusively by STV News under Freedom of Information legislation show that 455 crimes were alleged against 397 teachers between 2005 and 2009.
While they are predominately motoring offences - many assaults, drugs offences, serious sex crimes and offences against children are recorded against people trusted with the education and welfare of children in the region.

In 2006 one teacher was accused of cruelty, neglect and unnatural treatment of children.  The same year another was accused of assault with intent to rape and lewd and libidinous practices.

Meanwhile, in 2008 a teacher was accused of being concerned in the supply of drugs.

And in 2009, crimes libelled against teachers included rape, possession of an offensive weapon, vandalism, drunk driving, assault, fraud, theft by shoplifting, handling obscene material and soliciting prostitution.
