Nude sleepwalker awarded $14 million in damages
A JURY has awarded an Irish businessman 10 million euros ($14 million) in damages - the biggest ever libel award in Ireland - after his former employer issued a press release that he said suggested he'd made "inappropriate advances" when he had really been sleepwalking nude.
Donal Kinsella, 67, was the deputy chairman of Dublin-based mining company Kenmare Resources when he sleepwalked into company secretary Deirdre Corcoran’s room naked three times during a business trip to Mozambique in 2007.
The court in Dublin heard he regularly suffered from a sleep disorder called somnambulism which caused him to sleepwalk and that he had been taking painkillers and drinking that night.
Mr Kinsella said he usually slept naked and had not brought pyjamas with him because his wife had not packed them for him.
He told the court the only thing he remembered about that night was being woken up by another colleague Michael Carvill, who was shouting at him to go back to bed.
